Food Confessional: In The Beginning

"Why have you come to this blog, my child?"
"Forgive me, Internet, for I have eaten."

This year has a bit of a rough start for me as a food & drink loving gal.  After a New Year's Eve disaster led to a night in the ER (non-drinking related); a night filled with blood world, IV bags, ultrasounds and a ride in the giant white doughnut cat-scan, I was finally released without a diagnoses.  So I set out to cure myself with healthier habits, assuming that a lifestyle change might do the trick.
  1. More water
  2. Less booze
  3. Healthier eating
  4. Take my damn vitamins (eh, can't win them all)
Now this list is not unlike many of your own, I'm sure, if those New Years resolutions should still stand a chance.  It wasn't a resolution for me - It was a way to live better and not end up in the ER again.  So I have tried to give up my alcoholic temptations for the month (a girl can only hold out for so long ...) and eat less of my favorite: Buffalo Chicken Wings.

With the month coming to a close and my emotions running unbelievably high between my career and other assorted tribulations, I have repealed some rules on special occasions.  A glass of wine never hurt anybody (just don't ask the grapes).

My healthy eating? Not doing so hot.  I really thought this would be easier!  But how long can a girl go without pizza that burns the top of your mouth, or savory pastas dripping in rich creamy sauce, or cupcakes trimmed with frosting fit for any 6 year old's tea party?!?!  I'M ONLY HUMAN!!! But as I write this to you now, I am filled with a feeling much worse than any food-coma.  Regret.  How hard can this be?  I'm an adult with the ability to make my own choices about what I put in MY OWN mouth.  Shouldn't I be able to resist those luxurious fatty foods on my own?  Or perhaps do I really need a type of Food-Confessional? "Forgive me, Internet, for I have eaten."

Maybe that's the hang up ... We all love to feel so slim and in control when we go out to lunch with the girls and order "the house salad, dressing on the side please".  But how long do we wait before we dig into the leftover lasagna in the comfort and privacy of our pjs and trashy tv? I know I'm as guilty as sin ... my fingers are STILL sticky from the chocolate ice cream I just murdered on the couch.  Sure I can blame TLC for lining up 5 wedding-style shows in row, or the mass re-runs of Sex and The City.  But as I sit here now, feeling the tight elastic of my sweatpants, I know the only one I have to blame is myself.

....And Carrie Bradshaw.

Broke for Brunch: Nodding Head

Nodding Head
1516 Sansom Street

We’ve all been there before – in fact, we’re all there every other week.  You know the one; the week you don’t get paid.  And as much as we would love to channel our inner Carrie Bradshaw and roll out of bed to meet up with our best gal pals for brunch, reliving the chronicles from the night before between every delectable bite...we just can’t.  Some weeks, you just need to lay low, take a breather from the constant gluttony, and enjoy brunch for the broke.

This week’s brunch for the broke is focusing on a local watering hole, usually known for its funky décor and super hip brewskies. You know the one – Nodding Head.  Nodding Head is home to a treasure trove of beers and bobbins.  Normally, this second floor dive is home to the ultra-hipsters and beer connoisseurs of Philadelphia, all fighting for a spot at the bar at the happiest hour of the day.  Nodding Head has been a hidden champion among the beer lovers in our fair city.
The select six beers that Nodding Head features on tap, rotate to fit the season or mood.  Nodding Head is recognized by its interesting and lesser known brews.  Their six “chosen ones” rain down like frothy nectar from the Beer Kings of olde.  Constantly updated and always cold, Nodding Head has just what the doctor ordered (so long as your doctor prescribed a healthy dose of hops).
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Stephanie, this is supposed to be about BRUNCH FOR THE BROKE” and rest assured, my fine foodie friends, we’re getting warmer.

Brunch for the Broke all began when Michael and I decided we would quit lounging around the house and grab a spot of grub.  Michael, realizing that it was the “broke week”, and me realizing that my acting career meant that every week was a “broke week”…….well we put our heads together and came up with a fun game.  Thus, brunch for the broke was conceived.  We knew it had to be cheap, tasty, and preferably within walking distance.  Being an adventurous pair, we set out on our quest for a not-quite-breakfast and a not-so-much-lunch.

BANG - we almost smacked our noggins on the Nodding Head sign.  We glanced at the menu in the window and decided to make the climb to the second floor where we found the same bar known to many and loved by all…it just looked different in the light of day.  A haze of morning-ness seemed to wash over the entire joint, even the bobbins seemed to slow in their usual, bouncy routine.
Nodding Head’s nostalgia and charm still impressed us, but it wasn’t just the atmosphere that we craved on that chilly morning.  Mike and I were hungry…and ready to begin our morning with some Grog, on tap!  Mistakenly, our hopes were a little low.  The light crowd and the cold morning air seemed to discourage us.  But our expectations were shamefully cast aside as our brunch rolled out.
Grand Marnier French Toast the size of a small nation, topped with warm and googy caramelized apples couldn’t be shoveled into my pie-hole fast enough.  Their crunchy crust leading the way to a soft and doughy middle seemed too good to be true. But, Mike’s breakfast sandwich really was the star of the meal.  A salmon, egg, and bacon three-way of joy, this breakfast sandwich was UNBEATABLE.  The bun was lightly grilled and the ingredients were fresh and snapping.  Potato fritters accompanied this gorgeous dish to the flavor prom, where they won King and Queen.
Through the mist of morning and the fog of food coma, we saw four wise men with their musical instruments – a musical gift to all those brunchers who dared to ascend the steps.  If the amazingly unexpected food and favorite beers weren’t enough, Nodding Head wowed us again with their upbeat live music!  Now, you know as well as I do that in Philadelphia, “live music” either means “pay this expensive cover fee” or “enjoy our local high school band”.  But Nodding Head just could not be stopped.  Their excellent band serenaded us all through breakfast.  As we bopped our heads to the tunes, we started to resemble the sleepy figurines lining the glass cases.

The whimsical atmosphere, the fascinating beers, the bouncy music and the unbelievable food – ALL for just about thirty five dollars (don’t forget to tip your waitresses).  Nodding Head seemed like the underdog in our culinary dining experience; however it quickly rose to the top.  So, next weekend, when you’re feeling a little “poor girl chic”, be sure to check out this tucked away gem for an eye-opening display of classic (yet twisted) recipes with fresh ingredients; just be sure to grab a couple of beers so you’ll feel free enough to bop along to the band.

Latin Paradise on Pine Street

Mixto Restaurant
1141-43 Pine Street
Philadelphia, Pa 19107

Wouldn’t you love to be transported to a steamy and sensual Latin American country? Maybe taste the forbidden flavors of Cuba? Enjoy the playful palates of the feisty Caribbean?  Feel free to leave your passport at home and take a little walk down Pine Street.  You’ll stumble upon a beautiful, two-story brick building with glowing neon letters reading: MIXTO.  Welcome to your destination dinner.
Mixto is a fusion restaurant of all things Latin American, Cuban, and Caribbean.  With a large menu ranging from the familiar to the exotic, there is a bite for every fish in the sea.  Executive Chef, Freddy Mosquera, has beautifully created a menu of traditional Cuban paella, delicate Peruvian ceviche, and gorgeous Mediterranean fish dishes.  Hosting a wide selection of luxuriously selected meal cuts that are prepared with tender dedication, Mixto is perfect for the meat-lover.  Classically grilled and boldly marinated, Mosquera has certainly taken care in devising a menu for even the most inexperienced Latin American eater!

Boasting a large international wine list, Mixto is certainly a crowd-pleaser for the local Philadelphia wine-o.  They share a long list of sparkling cavas and brilliantly selected wines, perfect to partner any dish.  But don’t let the wine list fool you – Mixto also is home to an array of Latin American beers as well.  In a town where even the rivers seem to flow with malted brews, the beer connoisseurs will love trying the bold taste of Peruvian Cusquena and the iconic Dominican Presidente.  Stop in at happy hour and enjoy the refreshing mojitos and smart margaritas (grab some empanadas to share while you sip).
Sit outside and enjoy their luxurious island style ambiance or take your party inside for a dazzling scene of colors, music, and fragrant dishes moving past.  The mood is cool but lively.  Be it the plates passing by or the paintings lining the walls, the vibrant colors of Mitxo will hypnotize you into believing you are on far away from the roar of Philadelphia.  With lots of dark wood and greenery, you’re instantly transported to an island vacation.  Bold and sensual Latin music begins to pulse through you as you finish snappy drinks and elegant meals.  You’ll want to stroll along a sultry beach with Astrud Gilberto after your dining experience.  Feel fully bewitched as you meander into the misty Latin night.
